Match Report March 13th/14th 2004
The first-half whitewash meant that Cheshire Ladies faced the Relegation play-offs this half, and needed good results to stay in the Premier Division.
The unfortunate absences of Sarah Kippax and Nikki Fowler, our top two players, produced gloomy prospects as the team prepared for the fray.
Two newcomers were introduced to the squad – Amanda Clegg and Katy Miller, both from Glossop – and it was refreshing as well as quite a relief to know we have competent youngsters coming through the ranks, as injury and age sets in amongst the ‘old faithfuls’
The oppositions were not that tough, and a full squad would almost certainly have meant winning all three ties. Yorkshire was very weak for the first match, and although Cheshire managed to sneak ahead in several ties, we failed to win any, finally losing 6-15.
We faced a Surrey team next, again losing 0-5 fairly decisively.
Following an early night, a farewell to Hilary Kenyon (whose knees can’t do two days on the trot nowadays), the departure of Chief Supporter (and reserve if needed) Jane Law, and a long night on a very hard bed, Cheshire turned out bright-eyed and bushy tailed against a strong Hampshire side. Finally, we had two team heroes – Katy Miller and Hilary Tarleton at 4th and 5th string. Dismally, no-one else managed to convert the result to a win, and Cheshire finished 4th out of 4.
We are now looking ahead to a season in the 2nd division with a full team both halves to ensure promotion.
My thanks to the very enthusiastic performances and coaching contributions from everyone who participated – Nicky Swift, Di Parums (capt) , Hilary Kenyon, Amanda Clegg, Hilary Tarleton, Katy Miller and Jane Law.
Better luck next year!
Di Parums
