We
were again drawn against our usual opposition of Merseyside, Durham, and
Derbyshire, with the hosts being Merseyside and the venue as ever New Brighton.
We had a full side available and Patrick Foster, Andrew Whipp, John Clark,
Robert Forde, Geoff Taylor, Michael Knight and Peter Astbury, ensured that we
were in the top two behind a strong Durham side to go forward into the Promotion
Group for the Premier Division in the New Year.
Stage
Two was very late in the year due to PSA commitments and was set for April
7/8. We were again the hosts and drawn against Oxford, Durham and
Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire pulled out when they found that they could not get a
side together and because of the restructure and the reduced number of
courts required, I was able to use The Village Hyde as the venue. I was
heartened during the weeks coming up to the weekend when Paul Lord, who is now
based in Northumbria, called me and said he would like to play. So with Paul,
Patrick and Andrew plus the rest of the side I thought that this might be our
year.
But as with all the best-laid plans, Paul Lord was then required to play in the Austrian League for vast amounts of money! and Patrick was unavailable because he was playing in a PSA event in Canada! This left our side considerably depleted and with Andrew Whipp at number one, John Clark, Robert Forde, Geoff Taylor and Michael Knight against a very strong Oxfordshire side with Mark Cairns and Scott Handley and an equally strong Durham opposition, we finished third and again stay Division One.
