ENGLAND SQUASH
INTER
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002
LADIES
OVER 50 FINALS
@
THE PARK SQUASH CLUB, NOTTINGHAM
2
& 3 MARCH 2002
Don’t be fooled into thinking that
‘Ladies of a certain age’ are not competitive – they are extremely
competitive as this weekend of inter county finals displayed. At the same venue
the men’s over 35 finals were being held and although they were noisier they
did not have the angst or the tension of the Ladies final.
In
the semi finals Essex played Cambridgeshire and won 3-0 all matches being 3-0.
Cheshire
played Hampshire and after a faltering and very nervous start (Joss Garvey
going
2-0 down before the serve started working and eventually winning 10-8 in the
fifth) also won 3-0. Sue Coupe (3-0)and
Carolyn Sullivan (3-1) winning fairly
easily.
On
the Sunday Hampshire played Cambridgeshire for the honour of third place,
Hampshire won the no 3’s 3-1 and after a monumental battle Trish Macdougal
(Hants No 1) beat Margaret Chambers 3-2 (9/7 in the fifth) which gave Hants the
tie but didn’t stop the No 2’s having a real battle, Cambridges Sue
Billinghurst getting the win for Cambridge.
Onto
the final – now an hour late in starting owing to the great battle for third
place. Cheshire brought in reinforcements in the shape of their newest recruit
Wendy Wynn
at No 2 whilst Essex brought in their secret weapon World Masters
Champion Barbara Sanderson at No 3.
Barbara
played
Carolyn Sullivan
and won the first 2 games easily but then Carolyn
remembering that its not over until the last ball is hit came back to scrape it
9/7 in the fifth. First blood to Cheshire.
Then
came the big guns, Essex’s Averil Murphy versus Cheshire’s
Sue Coupe.
Cheshire won the first 2 games with Averil making an unusually large number of
errors and Sue playing superbly. Averil came back to win the third. The fourth
was going all Cheshire’s way until at 2-7 down Averil showed why she is an
international player and lost only 1 more point onto the way to a win and
squaring the match.
All
was then set up for the No 2’s. However
Wendy Wynne
was no match for Essex Sue
Vine although it did go to deuce in the second game and she won 3-0. Game set
and match to Essex who are worthy Champions although Watch out Essex - we
will be back!!
